MILESTONES FALL 2011
Monmouth Medical Center Foundation
It was a “happy accident” or “serendipity” when a business
associate of mine introduced me to Monmouth Medical
Center Foundation. The foundation had just added to their
team two new members – a new VP of Development and
a new Director of Development. I immediately had the
opportunity to collaborate with them on their projection to
redesign the foundation’s recurring publication, Milestones.
First, the masthead had to be created. For the words,
Milestones, I applied a classic, but contemporary serif
typeface – “Didot”. An elegant condensed sans serif, from
the Frutiger family of fonts, was applied to the sidebars and
tag lines. This complimented the serif heads throughout the
publication pages. To tie it all together, for body text I chose
a simple sans serif regular, for readability. The following
challenge was to create a color palette that evoked a warm,
friendly, but soothing array of colors. I conceived the idea
of using solid opaque colors that visually tinted down well,
in order to expand the creative process. This gave me
flexibility with muting colors and variations of tonal values.
Round shapes were used for artistic embellishments.
The dynamic look of Milestones was established, and
the first issue that went to print was a success!

Following through with the new design treatment of Milestones was intuitive. Complimentary to our palette, the dramatic, iridescent, background colors of the The Hirair & Anna Hovnanian Foundation Neonatal Intensive Care Unit enhance this Spring cover issue. In the foreground, charming donor Siran Hovnanian holding a newborn in her arms is a delightful peak into the feature article. Inside this issue, we see highlights of the plans for a major hospital interior design renovation – MMC’s Capital Campaign Project targeting various department expansions. The circular shapes work well with the new plans on the rise. Some additional approaches to body text type treatments following curvy shapes defines a new creative visual interest for the reader.

Try arranging a photo shoot coordinating the schedules of 13 doctors! That was the demanding task facing the Marketing Director for the cover of this issue. Ultimately, ten doctors showed up on the scheduled date, but 3 were a no show. The director arranged for additional photo shoots for the other three doctors. That’s where I came in with my expert Adobe Photoshop skills – no holds barred! My challenge was to choose one of the existing images from the original contact sheet and place the three men strategically in the group image. Production and enhancements were necessary – making realistic adjustments in size, position and lighting for each doctor. Appropriately, I could title this photo, “Where’s Waldo?”. Can you guess where the three doctors were placed? After that challenge, I breezed through the inside pages with new design solutions.

This issue truly summoned my skills as a designer. My task was to maintain the look of Milestones while including two additional essential sections that would work independently within the context and design of the overall magazine. The Capital Projects section informed the reader of Monmouth Medical Center’s building expansions, and then there was the 2012 Annual Report section. This prompted my decision to create a Table of Contents giving the reader insight on what to expect in this issue. Instinctively, I divided the publication in thirds. The first third designated Milestones articles and event information; the center section – the Capital Projects with pages in its own designed format. A colored bar bleeding off the page with text running up the side, differentiated the 2 other sections – the back section accrued for the 2012 Annual Report
